Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

Solid Snake // Raiden // Revolver Ocelot

2007–2009 Liberia PlayStation 2

MISSION BRIEFING

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is a 2001 action-adventure stealth game developed and published by Konami for the PlayStation 2. Directed by Hideo Kojima, the game is renowned for its deconstruction of the stealth genre, its prescient exploration of internet culture and information control, and its controversial narrative twist that replaced fan-favorite protagonist Solid Snake with rookie soldier Raiden. The story is told in two parts: the Tanker Incident (2007), where Solid Snake infiltrates a disguised tanker in New York Harbor to expose the smuggling of Arsenal Gear—a submersible nuclear-armed bipedal tank—and the Big Shell Incident (2009), where Raiden is deployed to rescue the President from terrorists who have seized an offshore environmental cleanup facility. The game's S3 Plan—a massive social simulation designed by the Patriots to test and manipulate human behavior—remains one of the most ambitious narrative concepts in gaming history. Sons of Liberty introduced the first-person aiming mode, the cyborg ninja's return as a playable character, and a complex dialogue system that influenced countless games that followed.

SUMMARY

The Tanker Incident (2007) exposes the smuggling of Arsenal Gear and sets the stage for the Patriots' grand manipulation. Two years later, the Big Shell Incident (2009) reveals itself to be the S3 Plan—a simulation designed to test the human will in the digital age. Raiden, manipulated by the Patriots, confronts Solidus Snake (a clone of Big Boss and the US President), defeats him, and inadvertently helps Revolver Ocelot upload the Patriots' control system into the global network. The game's ending leaves Raiden—and the player—questioning the nature of freedom, control, and reality itself.
